Who we are
The Jaume Mesquida winery was founded by our great-grandfather in 1945. We are a winery that was born out of the earth, of the efforts of the farming generations that have preceded us, of a love for the earth and a passion for a job well done.
Our concern and drive for constant improvement have made our company a pioneer in Mallorcan winemaking. Located in the heart of agricultural Mallorca, in the village of Porreres, we feel the heartbeat of the countryside and its people every day of the year.
Since 2004 the winery has been run by the fourth generation of the Mesquida family, the brother-and-sister team of Bàrbara and Jaume Mesquida Mora. What we have in our hands is a project rich in history, but also brimming with youthfulness, ambition and commitment. Every day we take on new challenges: we are a winery in constant evolution.
Wine is our life, and our life is wine!
Our Winemaking Process
Making wine means letting nature express itself. The basis of our wines is formed by the grapes that we grow with love and dedication. In the winery, the only task we perform is to accompany the juice of the grapes during its transformation process, devoting to it the maximum care to ensure that it conserves all its complexity of flavours and aromas. Making wine means conducting an orchestra of fragrances, sensations, tastes … it means interpreting nature.
The grapes are hand-picked and transported in boxes of 20 kg. We have replaced the tractor with carts that facilitate the pickers’ task, avoid the noise and compacting of the soil caused by the tractor, and make it possible to work in the vineyard even after a rainstorm. It has been a great step forward in our way of working.
Once in the winery, the grapes are placed in a cold store in order to commence the process at low temperature and so preserve their aromas. The grapes pass over the selection table in order for any remaining stones, leaves or snails to be eliminated. This is the moment when winemaking begins. First the grapes are removed from the stem, which is then used to make the biodynamic compost that we will return to the earth next year.
Healthy grapes, control of fermentation temperature, hygiene, patience and perseverance … wine needs its own time to evolve if it is to unfold elegantly in the glass.
Aged red wines need silence, calm, rest … and this is what they find in our climatised cellar. We have French oak casks of 225 and 300 litres; every year we renew a part of our stock of casks, which have a maximum age of four years.
With the bottling of wines begins a second transformation ... the lack of oxygen and the fact of being in a smaller container makes the wine round, which just do.
All of this process, which can take years, takes on its full meaning when the bottle is opened and its contents are shared. If you enjoy drinking our wines as much as we enjoy making them, then our mission is accomplished. Good health!
